Large area TFT LCDs go positive in April
Shipments of large-area TFT LCD panels in April showed the first year-on-year increase for seven months.
Is this further evidence that even the consumer market – flat panel TVs are key TFT products – is starting to turn?
But the continuing worry for the supply chain is that margins are being squeezed.
Unit shipments were up, but revenues were 39% lower than April 2008. The April sales total was $4.2bn.
According to the latest DisplaySearch Monthly TFT LCD Shipment Database, 40.1 million large-area TFT LACD panels shipped in April - 6% up month-on-month and 3% up on April 2008.
“April results are encouraging for panel makers, as they reflect a healthy recovery in demand,” says David Hsieh, v-p of DisplaySearch.
March showed some recovery and April shipment results indicate a continuation of that recovery.
All three major applications–notebook PC, monitor and TV–showed M/M growth.
The analyst expects shipments to continue to grow in Q2’09, and they forecast that panel makers will reach 80% capacity utilisation in Q2’09.
