Only Connect: Handy Design Tips #2 – Problems & Opportunities

i-desk-2.jpgWelcome to another post in a new series – Only Connect – by Nick Locke, of Nicab Ltd, who has over 15 years experience in the electronics manufacturing industry specialising in interconnection cable assembly.

In our last blog on design tips we said be bold use colour – don’t be afraid to step away from the traditional colours and formats.

What is fascinating is how a problem can be turned into an opportunity to provide a product that is not only visually attractive but also innovative.

Take for example the I-desk. They have an integrated desk with a PC built in. And with a desk looking great hiding the fact there is a very powerful PC inside, the last thing they wanted was the cables hanging everywhere. So what did they do?

They had a moulded block made for all the input devices so they all neatly connect into one place. With their logo on the block it makes it visually attractive. Colour also adds to the design. A very clever way of solving a common problem.

What about the cost?

Well the cost is not always that much. When you consider the value of spending a little more on the overall look of the product then you can easily argue there is great value on spending a bit extra on these types of solutions.

How do we do this, you say? Here is the clever part. You are not alone! Your trusted suppliers will help you. Involve them in the design process – this way you get the best value, and you know what they say about two heads being better than one!

Think about your products. What could you do that would enhance the look of your produce while solving problems in one go? It probably won’t cost as much as you think!
