Only Connect: New data connectivity – CAT6A & 10G comms

Welcome to another post in the series by Nick Locke, of Nicab Ltd, who has over 15 years experience in the electronics manufacturing industry specialising in interconnection cable assembly.

In recent years there has been a flood of industrial Ethernet RJ45 based interconnection systems to hit the market, most of these being Cat 5E & Cat 6.

Many of the systems have struggled with the latest Cat 6a 10G systems. However, a new innovation that comes from Phoenix Contact and their Cat 6a interconnection system looks to me one of the most easiest to assemble and from the instruction video one of the quickest to assemble.

So, how fast is 10G? To give you an idea of the different data transfer speed on Ethernet here is a great explanation from Phoenix:

Consider this example.

Let’s assume you already have CAT6A-ready equipment on your plant floor and you need to transfer a 50 gig file over a 100 meter cable.
From start to finish:
•    CAT5e cable would take approximately 100 minutes
•    CAT6 cable would take approximately 10 minutes
•    CAT6A cable would take approximately one minute

Even if you don’t need 10G capability right now, future-proofing your Ethernet networks now will get you ready for the high-speed capabilities of newly developed equipment.

Check out the following video on the system along with the assembly method.  I think you’ll agree it’s got to be one of the best out there.
