Only Connect: On innovation in Electronics

Welcome to another post in the series by Nick Locke, of Nicab Ltd, who has over 15 years experience in the electronics manufacturing industry specialising in interconnection cable assembly. The sad news that inventor of the TV remote control Eugene Polley, died at the age of 96 this week reminds us that the technology driven world we live in is thanks to brilliant yet simple ideas that innovators such as Eugene take from idea to product.

I find it fascinating that the first design was in the shape of a gun and many people could not see why they would want one. How bizarre when you think about how unbearable it is having to get up and change channels.

samsung-remote-control.jpgWelcome to another post in the series by Nick Locke, of Nicab Ltd, who has over 15 years experience in the electronics manufacturing industry specialising in interconnection cable assembly. The main point is that the remote control is a great example of how a single idea can change the way we live for ever.

I wonder how many people said to themselves, “why did I not think about that?” In fact, how many of us have had a idea for a new product years or months before seeing the product in the shops making someone else a millionaire?

The real point here is that the great work we do in the electronics industry can change lives for the better and you play an important part in this. Also, the next time you have a great idea do something about it. And you too can have a fascinating legacy just like Eugene Polly, even if – like us in the cable assembly business – it will eventually put us all out of business!
