An Engineer in Wonderland – Measuring one metre

I take my hat off to those who have to measure to extreme accuracies.

I came across slightly long winded but interesting paper on a US website that shows just what a bugger it is.

Imagine having to allow for the number of people in the measuring room because their breath increases humidity which changes the air’s refractive index.

I also came across this paper, which by my quick and unreliable calculation  means the USA will get about 40 feet wider once the US government has fully redefined the yard.

What surprised me was that the USA did not keep its own standard and relate it to the metre.
Perhaps the two great nations trusted one another once upon a time.
