An Engineer in Wonderland – spatial languages
I almost could not believe my ears last night.
Good old Radio 4 provided me with another revelation.
Apparently, about a third of the world’s languages have no concept of left and right.
Instead they have absolute references, so you have a south east hand, which becomes your north west hand when you turn around.
It turns out that people who use these languages have an enhanced sense of direction, and that they are just as good in cities as in open country.
There was lots of other great stuff.
You can find it here until the 10th of August.
