Nokia ‘Voice clarity’ mystery

A friend of mine has a trusty Nokia 6300.

Well, it was trusty, until people couldn’t hear him when he phoned them – only silence was heard at the far end…

A broken microphone was suspected.

…time passed… during which another phone was bought and during which the new phone proved too frustrating to operate …

So out came the trusty 6300.

Much messing deep within the 6300 menus turned up a setting called ‘Voice clarity’, which was turned off.

When Voice clarity was set to ‘on’, the phone worked properly again.

And it kept on working when Voice clarity was turned off again.

Does anyone know what might have gone on?

And, what is Voice clarity? And is it implemented in hardware or software?
