Ubuntu Linux gets slow
In the interest of security, to remove undetected malware, once in a while I completely re-load Ubuntu onto my home computer.
I have been using version 12.04 which has been very good for office-like activities, although I have never managed to play a movie DVD on it.
This update cycle, I found that Ubuntu 13.04 was available. So over two or three hours I downloaded that and put that on the machine.
Sadly, it is so slow, that 12.04 is going back on.
I just don’t have enough operating systems knowledge to find out what is slowing it down.
Reading around on the web, it is possible that the more complex GUI is at least part of the picture.
I am very thankful that the open source community has crafted Linux so generously,
and that canonical has made it so easily usable with the Ubuntu version,
but I wonder if Canonical might just be chasing a Windows-like visual experience at the expense of utility, remember the Gnome-Unity thing, at a time when even Microsoft might be trying too hard and over-complicating its visual exerience – have you used Word 2010?
