Android embeds itself in Avant aircraft seats
Android can embed itself in lots of places, and one of them is the back of aircraft seats. In flight entertainment (IFE) technology is an important field – a potential differentiator for airline operators – and Android certainly features here.
We’ve flagged this before – see Thales looks to ‘gesture control’ IFE system – and it is the next-gen IFE system from Thales that has figured prominently.
With Farnborough air show taking place, a new article on the site takes an in-depth look at the technology in question, Thales Avant TopSeries family of IFEC systems.
Andrew Doyle, of Flight Global, writes:
“A key attribute of Avant is it is based on Google’s Android operating system for mobile devices.”
“We want to take advantage of the Google marketplace and the ability to get more and more applications on board an IFE system sooner,” says Pellegrini. “We have access to all of those thousands of applications to put on the system in a much more easy manner.
“Another feature of Avant is the ability to provide up to 256GB of local solid-state storage built into the seat-mounted display.”
