Android embeds itself in fitness machines
Talk of gyms and such brings back bad memories of treadmills, sweat, boredom, and nothing to watch on the screen in front of me but MTV and Sky News… If only Android could have come to the rescue…
Well, Ausdroid.net is reporting on a new range of exercise equipment from Life Fitness that includes Android compatibility. The machines carrying the company’s Discover tablet consoles will enable the user to interact with their handset’s content through the 19-inch touch screen – via a mini USB connection.
As you lose energy on the machines, you’ll also be able to charge your Android smartphone…
Life Fitness will also have a mobile app, called LifeConnect and this will display exercise info such as pace, time-remaining and heart rate.
There is even an API for any developer looking to tap into this area, dubbed LFopen. The company writes:

Life Fitness believes the best exercise experience happens by empowering others. that’s why LFopen was established – allowing developers and fitness facility owners to access the Life Fitness Application Programming Interface (API). LFopen provides access to two APIs – a mobile API for Apple and Android devices and a website API (LFconnect). Developers can use either or both of these APIs to create mobile, website or hardware applications that interact directly with Life Fitness equipment, including the new Elevation Series Discover Tablet Console. Utilize data, such as average heart rate, calories burned and time, to create workout result-based solutions and more.
