Electric-powered trike drifting is born to be wild

Trike Drifting is a new one to me, but thanks to Sue P for highlighting it, raising a smile on a Friday.
A conventional drift trike could be described as an extreme tricycle for adults. The front forks usually harbor a BMX wheel with either pedals or stunt pegs protruding from the axle, while two smaller go-kart wheels bring up the rear. As the trike turns and the rider shifts his or her weight, sleeves fixed around the rear wheels, generally made from either PVC or polyethylene, create a loss of traction and set the drift in motion.
It seems an Arizona company, Local Motors, is developing an electric-powered drift trike – the Verrado – to make the riding easy. It does mean, however, that there are no pedals…
How far could you drive/ride on one battery charge? It depends on how much you drift – 10 miles or more, or 40 minutes or more, say the makers.
It’s currently a KickStarter campaign but it is more than half way to its goal of $20,000 with 28 days remaining to gather funding, at time of writing.

There are a number of ‘final’ steps required to bring the Verrado Electric Drift Trike to market including finalizing the brake caliper mounting system, finalizing the rear axle and battery mounting method, and firming up our relationships with motor and battery vendors. Lastly, we will work to complete the wire routing for the Verrado.
When we reach our Kickstarter Campaign goal we will use the funds to procure 4 batteries and magic pie hub motors by late April. We will then conduct thorough performance and longevity testing on the motors and batteries. Concurrently, procurement and testing of the brake will be moving forward. We will also be designing a caliper mount that will be bolted to the fork and will continue developing the disc brake system. Testing for all components is expected to be complete in the second week of May. At that time, the materials to fill the Kickstarter orders will be purchased, with deliveries beginning on 6/1/2014.
