LED fountains pour water on Olympic light shows

LED trafalgar lights.jpgThis story caught my eye recently – LED lighting will be used in the fountains in Trafalgar Square as part of the 2012 London Olympics.

Apparently the fountains around Nelson’s Column have been refurbished, and as well as new pumps to power the water there are LED lighting systems to power some colourful Olympic light shows.

“On special occasions, the new pumps will allow the fountains to fire an 80-foot jet of water,” reports the Evening Standard. “But the most notable element of the refurbishment has been the installation of innovative green energy lighting, replacing the previous system, which was beyond repair.”

It also reports that the change to LEDs will cut the carbon footprint of the fountain lighting by an estimated 90 per cent.
