Yanks Can Unlock Phones
In the Land Of The Free they can now unlock mobile phones without committing a criminal offence.
President Barack Obama says he “looks forward to signing” a bill passed by Congress making unlocking legal.
The bill overturns a 2012 ruling by the Librarian of Congress, urged on by the wireless carriers, that unlocking violated copyrights.
Under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act the Librarian is entrusted with determining what constitutes a copyright violation.
Under the new bill, phone users can’t legally unlock phones till after contracts expire.
