Ruminations on the electronics industry from David Manners, Senior Components Editor on Electronics Weekly.

Auntie Apple

Know thyself is a great maxim, and know how you come across  to others is another  good one.

Am I alone in thinking Apple is screwing up its image?

Here’s a company making products which have to appeal to kids, and who do we get fronting up Apple’s public events?

Grey-haired middle-aged guys.

Tim Cook looks like your auntie.

Kids don’t think it’s cool to buy stuff off their auntie.

Samsung comes from the land of Gangnam Style – fun, glitzy and radical.

Steve Jobs, of course, was middle-aged in Apple’s latter glory days but Jobs would have come across as a stroppy adolescent if he’d lived to be 100.

We all wish he had.

Yes indeed Torben this is not the old Steve Jobs spirit where he’d fly the Jolly Roger over his development building

Also, their prudish censoring of content in the App Store emphasises their “old aunt” image.
