Ruminations on the electronics industry from David Manners, Senior Components Editor on Electronics Weekly.
It looks as though Samsung will be Capex King this year with a semiconductor spend of $11.6 billion
Intel is spending $11 billion and TSMC is spending $10 billion – or that’s today’s plan.
Capex numbers are will o’ the wisps.
But with a seven per cent semiconductor market growth year forecast for this year, and a double digit growth year forecast for next year, maybe these figures are more solid than usual.
The curious thing is that SEMI, the organisation representing the suppliers of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, is expecting a total spend of only $36 billion this year.
Can this mean that the rest of the industry – including Hynix, Micron, Toshiba, GloFo and others – are only spending a collective $3.4 billion this year?
I don’t think so.Tags: double digit growth, manufacturing equipment, micron, semiconductor market, wisps
