Threatened by SMIC for 40nm orders, UMC is to ramp its 40nm capacity, reports DigiTimes.
According to DigiTimes, UMC will add 10k to 15k 12 inch wpm to its 40nm capability in Taiwan and will increase its China-based 8 inch capacity from 44k wpm to 48-50k.
Improving 28nm yields at UMC have led to increasing orders for 28nm from Qualcomm snd MediaTek, it is reported.
However UMC anticipates competition for 28nm orders from SMIC starting at the end of the year.
Meanwhile UMC is said to be thinking of buying Malaysian foundry Silterra to boost production volumes.Tags: digitimes, inch capacity, SMIC, UMC Expansive Threatened
