Wafer Prices Rising As Supply Lags Demand
According to the two Taiwan newspapers the Commercial Times and the Economic Daily News the Taiwanese foundries are swamped with orders, customers are offering a premium for wafers and prices are climbing.
UMC is reported to have raised prices by between 5% and 15% with the higher rises inflicted on customers who take less than 5000 wafers a month.
Previously offered discounts have been rescinded.
It is said that TSMC cannot cope with orders and that its customers are offering to pay 3% to 5% extra for their requirement.
Neither UMC nor TSMC are commenting on the reports.
