Can Intel Beat TI?
Between 1959 and 1984, one semiconductor company reigned supreme over the industry at No.1 – TI. Will TI’s unprecedented 25 years at the top ever be matched?
Well Intel’s done 20 years – taking over the top slot in 1991. So Intel’s got until 2016 to match TI’s record.
Can it do it? Well, it looks as if it could be a close run thing because Samsung is catching up on Intel fast.
In 2010, Intel had revenues of $40bn while Samsung’s revenues were $28bn.
Intel grew 25% last year while Samsung grew 59%.
In Q1 2011, Samsung had 9.2% of the world chip market compared to Intel’s 13.3%.
Back in 2001, Intel’s market share at 14.9% was more than three times that of Samsung at 3.9% when Samsung ranked fifth.
Since then, Intel’s market share has ranged between 11.9% and 14.8%.
Samsung’s revenues grow by 355% from 2001 to 2010.
Without a significant position in memory, it will be difficult for Intel to match Samsung’s growth rate, but for Samsung it’s still a big gap to close.
I wonder if anyone has opened a book on this race.
