ST & Imec Lead 500-Engineer, $360m, Euro FD-SOI Project
STMicroelectronics is getting together with Imec to build FD-SOI. A seven nation, 19 partner, $360m, 500-engineer, 3 year, EU-backed project will set up two FD-SOI pilot lines in Crolles and Dresden.
The project, co-ordinated by Eniac, goes by the snappy title: ‘Pilot Lines for Advanced CMOS Enhanced by SOI in 2x nodes, Built in Europe’ – abbreviated to ‘Places2Be’.
Led by ST, Places2Be will support the deployment of a 28nm FD-SOI pilot line and a 14nm FD-SOI pilot line as well as a dual source that will enable volume manufacturing in Europe.
Places2Be will also create a European microelectronics FD-SOI design environment.
Organisations signed up to Places2Be are: Acreo, Adixen Vacuum Products, Axiom IC, Bruco ICs, Commissariat à l’énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives, Dolphin Integration, Ericsson, eSilicon Romania, Forschungzentrum Jülich, GlobalFoundries, Grenoble INP, IMEC, Ion Beam Services, Mentor Graphics, Sarl, SOITEC SA, ST-Ericsson, STMicroelectronics, Université Catholique de Louvain, University of Twente.
The FD-SOI manufacturing sources for the project are ST’s Crolles fab and the dual source volume facility will be in GlobalFoundries’ fab 1 in Dresden.
