Where Does Technology Come From?

Where does technology come from these days?

An engaging answer to this question was recently delivered by Mike Bryant, CTO at Future Horizons, and I quote:

“Fundamental research comes from the UK (now Bell Labs gone)

Systems design comes from Northern Europe

New applications come from America

Process technology comes from Belgium

Design toolsets come from America

Fabbed wafers come from Taiwan

Processors come from Intel

Sensors come from Italy

Manufactured goods come from China and Korea

Marketing comes from America.”

    Reminds me of that joke…
    In Heaven…
    the mechanics are German
    the chefs are French
    the police are British
    the lovers are Italian
and everything is organized by the Swiss.
    In Hell…
    the mechanics are French
    the police are German
    the chefs are British
    the lovers are Swiss
and everything is organized by the Italians.

I didn’t want people to think your judgment could have been in any way impaired, Mike.
