Call Off The Black Helicopters
A couple of GCHQ guys went round to The Guardian and smashed up HDDs containing files leaked by Edward Snowden, says Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger.
The move was started by a phone call from ‘the centre of government’ saying: “You’ve had your fun. Now we want the stuff back.”
Laying into a MacBook Pro, one of the GCHQ duo joked: “We can call off the black helicopters.”
Smashing HDDs doesn’t obliterate the information – that’s still out there in the ether on a thousand servers, dongles and HDDs. It’s a bit like burning books – symbolic, but silly.
The Guardian will continue to investigate, edit and publish Snowden’s material, says Rusbridger, but the work will be done in more liberal climes.
Shame on England for not being one of them.
