‘Kill Taiwan’ Poo-Poo-ed
Samsung’s ‘Kill Taiwan’ strategy is a non-starter. DigiTimes reports a speech by TSMC CEO Morris Chang which poo-poos the Korean company’s aspirations to take the foundry industry from Taiwan.
Chang points out that TSMC has technological leadership. TSMC had all the 28nm production last year and will have 99% of it this year, says Chang.
Samsung says it qualified its 28nm process in 2011 but its volume is still on 32nm.
The other aspect where Samsung is behind TSMC is in ‘intensive customer relationships’, said Chang.
Samsung has only taken on a few high volume customers with one IC design at a time, while TSMC handles hundreds of customers and thousands of designs.
The pissing match between the three main foundries and Intel over who is where on the Moore’s Law scaling trail has become fantastical in its claims and counter-claims, but Chang is right on these two issues.
