Top Ten Companies Awarded US Patents 2007-2012

Thanks to the Brookings Institution for this - the top ten companies for filing US patents in the last five years. The surprise here is that Micron makes it into the top ten despite being a lot smaller than the others.

IBM              42

Microsoft      16

Intel               11

HP                  8

Cisco               7.6

Micron            7.4

GM                 6.3

AT&T             5.7

Apple              5.3

Yes of course you’re right, random_guy, it’s thousands. So IBM has filed for 42000 patents in the last five years

These are mostly US filings filed just to be safe, often in a hurry, often as a provisional application, not knowing how technology or the business case will progress.
A better metric is the WIPO statistics for PCT applications. These are filed with priority from the domestic application with a view to later file into national and regional pahse around the world.

IBM is here at position 28.

42 Million patents for IBM, over 100 million for the top ten, that is a vast number. Are they all truly original ideas?
How do you keep track of that many patents?

I would have thought that filing for a thousand patents a year was enough for anyone – even Apple

What is the units of numbers? They don’t make any sense to me.
I am sure Apple have got more than 5.3 patents on round corners on phones!
