In-house Baseband Manufacturing 12-18 Months Away, says Intel.
One of the curious things about Intel’s mobile efforts is that it has never made its baseband processors on a leading edge process in its own fabs.
Yet Intel always believes that it’s process strength is fundamental to its competitiveness.
Asked when he would make Intel baseband processors in-house – they are currently made by TSMC – CEO Brian Krzanich replies: “We believe that the integration of the process technology and the design and our leadership in Moore’s Law just gives us a real advantage . . . . . .so it’s always critical for all of our products to move them inside as fast as we can. And yes, we’re still targeting towards end of ’15 or beginning of ’16 to move those products inside.”
It’s taking a mighty long time about about doing it.
