Speakers at this week’s European Electronics Forum 2000, once agin flagged up the potential of the comms market for chip makers. John Dickson, CEO of Lucent Microelectronics, remarked that: “Seven out of the top ten growth applications are communications based.” Wilf Corrigan, CEO of LSI Logic, pointed out that mobile subscribers would top 1.2 billion by 2005, broadband subscribers would total 48 million by 2003. Pasqaule Pistorio, CEO of STMicroelectronics, said that sales of products for connectivity accounted for 52 per cent of ST’s portfolio.
