Mitsubishi steps back from Alpha

Digital Equipment has confirmed reports that Mitsubishi Electric has suspended indefinitely its joint development agreement with Digital on future versions of the Alpha microprocessor. In the meantime Samsung has obtained full rights to Alpha technology and future developments.
Samsung is boosting its backing of Alpha, in the face of a possibility that the US government will block Intel’s proposed acquisition of Digital’s Alpha manufacturing operations and Alpha technologies.
Samsung has received a full architectural license from Digital for an undisclosed financial arrangement. It has the rights to all current and future Alpha related intellectual property. Digital also said it would work with Samsung to market the chip. Samsung can now go ahead and produce new versions of Alpha for specific markets.
