Cloud will boost economy, says EC
Tomorrow, EC Vice President and Commissioner for the Digital Agenda, Neelie Kroes, is to present a cloud-based strategy for Europe aimed at boosting EU GDP by nearly a trillion euros by 2020 and creating 3.8m new jobs.
The EC’s strategy is to make companies’ cloud services interoperable. Instead of trying to lock in customers by proprietary systems, the companies should agree standardisation promoting ‘interoperability, data portability and reversibility,’ says the EC’s strategy document.
The EC intends to set up a European Cloud Partnership (ECP) to encourage member states to store more public data in the cloud. The ECP will ‘work on common procurement requirements for cloud computing in an open and fully transparent way,’ says the EC plan.
