This will bring a significant new player into the market for free downloadable design tools.
"We expect to offer a specialist design tool very soon," said Mark Larson, president of Digi-Key.
Larson said the online distributor has a number of initiatives that are intended to increase its engagement with engineers.
"We are strengthening our role with the customer, but this is not only about product support it includes design tools," said Larson.
Digi-Key wants to differentiate its tool offering from other downloadable tools in the market from RS Components and element14.
"In board layout a big factor is error detection, our design tool will offer this," said Larson.
No launch date for the new tool has been set, but it is likely to be available before the end of the year, and maybe in time for the Electronica exhibition in Munich in November.
Digi-Key is also adding new application engineering support which customers can access over the phone or the internet.
