Ultrabooks were Intel’s attempt to revive the flagging PC market, but the attempt turned out to be doomed because of the switch to tablets. According to analysts Canalys one third of all sales of personal computer products last year were sales of tablets.
It didn’t do Ultrabooks any good to sport the slogan ‘Inspired by Intel’ when everyone knew they’d been inspired by MacBook Air.
‘While SSDs achieved significant growth in 2012, the expansion was diminished by the poor results for Ultrabooks,’ says IHS, adding ‘global NAND flash memory market revenue fell 7%in 2012 as disappointing Ultrabook sales negated the impact of surging demand from Apple for its iPhone line,’ says IHS.
NAND industry revenue fell to $19.7 billion last year from $21.2 billion in 2011.
