Google to sack 20% of staff of Motorola Mobility
Google, which paid $12.5bn for Motorola Mobility a year ago, plans to sack 20% of its workforce.
It was said at the time of the purchase by Google that the deal was done to get hold of Motorola’s patent portfolio. It has 17,000 patents,
4000 jobs will be cut under the Google plan which will mostly fall on non-US sites. About two thirds of the job losses will come from outside the US as Google closes about a third of all Motorola Mobility’s sites.
Google is said to want to cut out Motorola Mobility’s low-end phones and focus on a few smartphones. However Apple and Samsung take 85% of the revenues from that business.
