Historic semi shift next year
Next year marks a big transition for the semiconductor industry – PCs will lose their place as the largest user of ICs and mobile phones will take over, says IC Insights.
Cellphone IC sales will exceed standard PC IC dollar volumes for the first time in 2013—$70.7bn versus $65.1bn ICs used in PCs
‘For most of the last two decades personal computers have accounted for a third or more of annual IC sales,’ says IC Insights.
This year the PC industry will account for a quarter of the IC industry’s output and the phone industry will account for 24%.
By 2016, the PC industry will take only 20% of IC output, and the phone industry will take 32%, says IC Insights.
Between 2011-16 desktop PC unit shipments will have a CAGR of 0.1%; notebook computers are expected to grow by a CAGR of 7.4%; tablet shipments are forecast to increase by a CAGR of 33.9%; and convertible tablet/notebook systems are expected to have a CAGR of 130.5%.
