Photonic IC launch in 2014 for ST

STMicroelectronics expects to have first silicon photonics products by mid-2014, reports gazettabyte.

The products have been in the ST pipeline since March 2012, when ST took a licence from Luxtera.

The first chip-sets will be made on a 65nm process at Crolles. The photonics and the electronics of each product will be on separate die.

The initial target market is for connectivity in data centres

The technology delivers low-cost transceivers for data rates of 100Gb, 400Gb and upwards with support for 1310nm, 1490nm and 1550nm wavelengths
