UK design house Plextek RFI has recruited an engineer with GaN power amplifier (PA) design experience.
Robert Smith was previously with Thales Nederland where he designed sub-systems for active phased array naval radar.
“We are delighted to welcome Robert to our team,” said CEO Liam Devlin. “We are seeing increasing demand for our design skills from right across the industry, in applications ranging from defence and aerospace through wireless technology and satellite communications to test and measurement.”
Prior to joining Thales Smith earned a PhD at Cardiff University, sponsored by Roke Manor Research, during which he investigated the design and implementation of broad-band, high-efficiency RF PAs.
This included developing GaN transistor push-pull microwave amplifiers using load-pull measurement techniques. He won best paper at the 2013 ARMMS RF and Microwave Society Conference for a presentation on the work. Smith also published two papers on broadband balun and PA design at the IEEE International Microwave Symposium.
