ST’s Malta plant to be discussed at EU Summit
The Prime Minister of Malta is expected to use the EU Summit this week to button-hole the French and Italian prime ministers to force STMicroelectronics not to re-locate operations from its Maltese assembly plant, reports The Malta Independent newspaper.
It is reported that over 100 workers and managers at the plant are currently on forced leave.
Apparently a previous Maltese prime minister asked Silvio Berlusconi and Nicolas Sarkozy to intervene when ST had previously wanted to curtail the Maltese operation.
The plant is a big contributor the Malta’s exports.
ST had tried to make the workers take forced leave on days that would have affected shift and weekend allowance, reports The Malta Independent, but the unions insisted that forced leave should be taken on weekdays.
The union is now said to have asked ST for clarification of its intentions so it can decide whether to ask the government to get assurances from ST about the security of employment at the plant.
