TSMC's Q3 sparkles; buys land for 450mm fab
TSMC will start building an 450mm fab in 2016 with the intention of hooking up equipment in 2017, reports the Focus Taiwan News Channel.
The fab will be using 7nm process technology.
TSMC is said to have paid the government US$100m for the land to build the fab on. It is near the Hsinchu Science Park.
TSMC had a sparkling Q3 based on high mobile demand. Profits were up 62% at $1.7bn on sales of $4.7bn.
“We think the reason is the strength in mobile,” said CEO Morris Chang, ” we expect mobile to be strong for a number of years.”
Next year’s capex will be “in the same ballpark” as this year’s $8.3bn, said Chang.
In Q3, 13% of TSMC’s $4.7bn revenues came from ICs made on the 28nm process.
