Ultrabooks Flop

Ultrabooks have failed and one of the results of their failure is a severe negative impact on the NAND flash market.
‘A major drag on the NAND industry was the disappointing sales of Ultrabooks, negatively impacting the flash memory prospects of cache solid state drives (SSD) used in the superthin computers,’ says analysts IHS, ‘while Ultrabooks have had some success penetrating into the consumer computing experience, adoption overall has been underwhelming.’

Ultrabooks were Intel‘s attempt to revive the flagging PC market, but the attempt turned out to be doomed because of the switch to tablets. According to analysts Canalys one third of all sales of personal computer products last year were sales of tablets.

It didn’t do Ultrabooks any good to sport the slogan ‘Inspired by Intel’ when everyone knew they’d been inspired by MacBook Air.

‘While SSDs achieved significant growth in 2012, the expansion was diminished by the poor results for Ultrabooks,’ says IHS, adding ‘global NAND flash memory market revenue fell 7%in 2012 as disappointing Ultrabook sales negated the impact of surging demand from Apple for its iPhone line,’ says IHS.

NAND industry revenue fell to $19.7 billion last year from $21.2 billion in 2011.
