Toshiba to start GaN-on-silicon LED production

Before Christmas. Toshiba will start mass production of white LEDs made on a GaN-on-silicon process using eight inch wafers.

Developed with Bridgelux, the LEDs will be made at Toshiba’s Kaga plant in Northern Japan.

This month Plessey Semiconductors also starts production of GaN-on-silicon LEDS on six inch wafers at Plymouth. Plessey’s LED technology, developed by Cambridge University‘s Centre for Gallium Nitride,  has a superior 160 lumen/W performance.

Toshiba estimates the global LED market at $8.5bn last year and at $15bn in 2016. It is planning to gain 10% market share.
