Globalpress: PMC marries OTN and Ethernet
This month, PMC-Sierra brings out its converged Ethernet + OTN optical networking solution.
“OTN (Optical Transport Network) is the new kid in town replacing SONET SDH,” says Babak Samimi, PMC’s vp for marketing and technical applications support, “it’s the new transport layer in the WAN.”
The benefits are simplicity. From supporting T1/E1, ATM, POS, DS3/E3 the new model is simply OTN + Ethernet.
“The carrier wants a very simple end-to-end solution that scales with Ethernet,” says Samimi.
“What’s really growing our business is big data,” adds Samimi, “we’re moving from a carrier-centric company to a company which moves, stores and interconnects with your data on and off the Internet.”
This has affected PMC’s customer profile. “We used to be selling just to the Alcatels, Huaweis and ZTEs now we’re selling to HP, Dell and IBM,” says Samimi.
The data centre people are having an increasing stake in network development. “The data centre guys are building their own networks,” says Samimi, “they’re building their own boxes rather than buying them. They’re building networks to use themselves or to lease them to people like BT and Verizon.”
The statistics for big data are mind-boggling: IBM reckons 90% of the data in the digital world has been created in the last two years; a top five bank will currently have 50PetaBytes of data which is growing at 30-40% a year; Nasdaq generates a million messages a second and handles four billion transactions a day; 250 million photos are uploaded to Facebook every day.
