MWC 09 – TI unveils OMAP 4 for 1080p HD in Barcelona
Texas Instruments has announced the next generation OMAP 4 mobile applications platform which will support 1080p HD video record and playback and 20 megapixel imaging.
The chip’s processing comes from a C64x DSP-based programmable multimedia engine, multi-format hardware accelerators and the dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore.
The Cortex-A9 core runs at 1GHz and supports symmetric multiprocessing. There is also a separate still image signal processor.
TI has also tried to optimise the power consumption through the use of multi-core architecture and a 45nm process technology.
TI has also moved the OMAP 3 family to a 45nm process with the launch of the OMAP36x application processor.
According to TI, the 45nm process technology will support a 25% reduction in power and 75% improvement in graphics performance compared to the OMAP34x processor family which is fabbed on a 65nm process.
There is a dedicated 2D/3D graphics hardware accelerator for applications like realistic 3D gaming.
It also supports multi-standard 720p HD functionality for HD video recording and playback. An on-chip image signal processor supports up to 12 megapixel imaging.
