Qualcomm gets Snapdragon S4 Pro in LG smartphone
Qualcomm will supply its Snapdragon S4 Pro mobile chipset LG for LG’s quad-core smartphone.
The 3G/LTE multi-mode smartphone will be introduced into Korea in September and global rollout to follow.
Snapdragon S4 Pro has an Adreno 320 graphics processor (GPU) and support for higher resolution displays, but is otherwise hardware and software compatible with the S4.
The GPU “with up to a four times performance improvement, providing a superior user experience for Web browsing, games, user interfaces and other graphics applications,” said Qualcomm.
Pure number crunching is supported through new APIs like OpenCL, “to enable next-generation use cases such as light-field cameras for mobile devices”, said the firm.
For 3D graphics, hardware acceleration of advanced rendering features like instancing, occlusion queries and multiple render targets has been added.
There is also dedicated hardware to accelerate Windows and it “fully supports the top game engines in the industry from Unity, Epic and others”, said Qualcomm. “The S4 Pro version of MSM8960 is optimised for the most advanced operating systems, including Windows 8.”
