Microsemi introduces motor control algorithms
Microsemi has produced motor control algorithms optimised for its SmartFusion customisable system-on-chip (cSoC), allowing design engineers to deliver single-chip multi-motor control.
“Many systems require control of multiple motors which results in a dedicated micro-controller for each individual motor,” says Microsemi vp Paul Ekas”by implementing these algorithms on devices that combine hardware acceleration with the ARM Cortex-M3 microcontroller, designers can significantly reduce power and system complexity.”
As well as Cortex, SmartFusion contains flash-based field programmable gate array integrated programmable analogue circuitry for motor sensing.
The motor control algorithms address DC brushless, AC brushless and three phase motor control applications.
The algorithms have been implemented as a combination of hardware subroutines in the FPGA fabric and embedded software on the ARM Cortex-M3.
This offloads the heavy software processing into dedicated hardware. The reduced processing load on Cortex provides more processing headroom to perform system and application layer control task management.
