Elektra Awards 2014 open for entries

Elektra Awards 2014 Logo fullThe Elektra European Electronics Industry Awards 2014 are launched this week. 

Celebrating product innovation and business success in the industry for more than a decade, the Elektra Awards is recognised as the best promotional platform to celebrate the achievements of individuals and companies across the electronics industry.

We invite companies to enter this year’s awards and be part of the Elektra 2014 success story.

New for this year is an award category celebrating Internet-of-Things Product Innovation.

This Award will be presented to a semiconductor reference design or system level product which best demonstrates technical capabilities and usefulness of the internet-of-things.

The Elektra Awards 2014 will also look for the Electronics Technology Blog of the Year, which will be selected by visitors to the Electronics Weekly website in an online vote.

The awards will be presented at the industry’s biggest gala evening dinner on Wednesday 26 November. This year the Elektra Awards has a great new venue, the Lancaster London Hotel, Lancaster Terrace, London W2 2TY.

Award Categories 2014

2014 Outstanding Performers

Company of the Year 

Company of the year will be chosen from the winners of each of the individual categories. Technology innovation and business success will be taken into account as the judges identify one company which demonstrates outstanding achievements.

Lifetime Achievement Award

This is a special award presented by Electronics Weekly to an individual who in our opinion has made a significant contribution to electronics technology or business in Europe.

Business Awards

The Elektra Awards promotes exceptional business practice.

 

Design Team of the Year

This Award category is open OEMs and design houses involved in product development projects. Entries should include the description of a development project which been active during the last 12 months. The projects can emphasise the hardware element, the software element or a combination of the two. Judges will be looking for interesting application of new or existing technologies.

 

Distributor of the Year

This Award category is open to companies that derive a majority of their revenues from the selling of components, systems or software products which are manufactured by their principals. They must have business operations in the UK. The Award will be presented to the distributor which can demonstrate that it achieved clear business milestones during the last 12 months. Judges will be looking for evidence of market share success, channel innovation and new service launches.

 

Environmental Award

The Award category is open to all companies in the market – manufacturers, distributors and design firms. The judges will be looking for evidence that companies have introduced new and innovative ways to reduce the impact on the environment of their products, manufacturing processes and commercial practices in the last 12 months. Entries should demonstrate evidence of how good environmental practice has permeated across the company by being inclusive of staff at all levels of the organisation.

 

Manufacturer of the Year

Manufacturers – OEMs, sub-contractors and EMS companies with operations in the UK – are eligible. The Award will be given to the manufacturer which has demonstrated the most impressive level of commercial success and new business projects in global markets during the last 12 months. Business highlights can include collaborations, partnerships, investments, newly introduced technical capabilities and environmental compliance projects.

 

New Company of the Year

Venture fund or privately financed companies which have set up operations in Europe in the last five years can enter for this Award. Judges will be looking for evidence that a company is building a business to be competitive in global markets. New companies can be involved in design OR manufacture OR distribution activities.

 

Engineers of the Future

The Elektra Awards supports young engineers and students.

 

Educational Support Award 

This Award will be presented to a company which demonstrates a commitment to the education of engineers of the future by providing support to schools, colleges and universities. This can include financial support for specific scholarships and awards. The support may not be purely financial but may be of a more practical nature in the form of technology they have provided. It can also involve collaborations providing seminars.

 

Rising Star New Engineer of the Year

Electronics Weekly is looking for a talented young engineer in their first five years in the industry. Companies and universities can enter candidates who demonstrate a high level of practical skill and ambition which is contributing to the business. Judges will hope to see evidence of practical success in a project which will have some commercial outcome. It is hoped that the winning engineer will demonstrate a combination of both technical knowledge and practical application of their skills in specific projects.

 

University Department of the Year

This Award category will be presented to an electronic and electrical engineering department within a university or collage which has a world-class reputation for training the engineers the industry so desperately needs. Judges will look for evidence of a high academic success rate, joint research projects with industrial partners and international collaborations.

The Elektra Awards promotes exceptional technical innovation

 

Design Tools and development software Award

This Award will be presented to the software design tool, application or software IP introduced in the last 12 months which demonstrates technical capabilities and usefulness which differentiate it from competitive products. Product types eligible for this category are EDA chip, design verification, emulators, PCB design tool suites and embedded development tools for microcontroller based systems. Judges will be looking for evidence that the entry achieves a true improvement in performance which can be applied to design projects.

 

Passive & Electromechanical Product of Year

This Award will be presented to the passive or electromechanical component which demonstrates technical capabilities and usefulness which differentiate it from competitive products. Product types eligible are resistors, capacitors, inductors, sensors, switches, connectors or actuators which were introduced in the last 12 months. Judges will be looking for evidence of product performance presented in numbers and/or design applications. Judges will be impressed by technical innovation in design, use of materials and packaging.

 

Power System Product of the Year

This Award will be presented to the power product which demonstrates technical capabilities and usefulness which differentiate it from competitive products. Eligible product types are DC-DC, AC-DC power modules, open, closed and encapsulated power supplies, power ICs and discrete power components. Judges will be looking for evidence of product performance presented in numbers and/or design applications. Judging criteria will look for new topologies & architectures, use of materials, advanced semiconductor technologies and packaging.

 

Renewable Energy Design Award

This Award will be presented to a system or component product which can be used in the development of renewable energy systems such as solar, wind, tidal or energy harvesting systems and components. Eligible products will include hardware/software systems or semiconductor products. Judges will be looking for evidence of product performance presented in numbers and/or design applications. The entry should include a description of the product or system design highlighting its relevance to renewable energy systems, for example how it can improve efficiency or usability of renewable energy systems.

 

Semiconductor Product of the Year – Analogue

This Award will be presented to an analogue or mixed-signal semiconductor product which demonstrates technical capabilities and usefulness which differentiate it from competitive products and has been introduced in the last 12 months. As well as performance data, judges will be looking for evidence of how the product addresses and solves specific design issues. Judges will be looking for evidence of product performance presented in numbers and/or design applications.

 

Semiconductor Product of the Year – Digital

This Award will be presented to a digital semiconductor IC, or chip where the digital element is the main differentiating function, which demonstrates technical capabilities and usefulness which differentiate it from competitive products and has been introduced in the last 12 months. As well as performance data, judges will be looking for evidence of how the product addresses and solves specific design issues. Judges will be looking for evidence of product performance presented in numbers and/or design applications.

 

LED Lighting Product of the Year

 

This Award will be presented to a semiconductor lighting product which demonstrates technical capabilities and usefulness which differentiate it from competitive products and has been introduced in the last 12 months. Eligible products are LEDs, lighting modules, luminaires and driver ICs. As well as performance data, judges will be looking for evidence of how the product addresses and solves specific design issues. Judges will be looking for evidence of product performance presented in numbers and/or design applications

 

Test Product of the Year

This Award will be won by a test instrument or system which demonstrates technical capabilities and usefulness which differentiate it from competitive products and has been introduced in the last 12 months. Eligible products include benchtop, handheld, modular, PXI-based, boundary scan and in-circuit production test equipment. Judges will be looking for evidence of product performance presented in numbers and/or design applications.

 

Internet and technology

The Elektra Awards promotes innovation related to the internet

 

Internet-of-Things Product Innovation Award 

This Award will be presented to a semiconductor reference design or system level product which best demonstrates technical capabilities and usefulness of the internet-of-things (IoT). Eligible products must provide some element of the IoT – wireless communications, security, storage or user applications, and the product must have been introduced in the last 12 months. As well as performance data, judges will be looking for evidence of how the product provides true innovation in the application of the IoT.

 

Electronics Technology Blog of the Year – Online vote

The internet is the engineers’ most valuable source of information and a community of tech bloggers provide useful information on all manner of technical and business topics. In this category visitors to the Electronics Weekly website are invited to select the Electronic Technology Blog which they feel provides original must-read information on topics important to those working in the electronics industry. Or maybe it is the best blog because it is just fun to read in your downtime. A shortlist of blogs will be selected by the Editor.

Consumer Product Innovation of the Year – Online vote

The internet makes us aware of truly awesome consumer product innovations from around the world. In this category visitors to the Electronics Weekly website are invited to select the Consumer Electronic Product Innovation which they feel makes the most inspirational use of technology. A shortlist of products will be selected by the Editor.
