30 companies get SiC
Four companies have set up as SiC foundries: Fraunhofer, Ascatron, ISB and Raytheon.
Last year four companies ramped production aggressively – Rohm, ST, GeneSIC and MicroSemi – in a bid to close the gap with market leaders Infineon and Cree.
In Japan, Toshiba, Panasonic, Toshiba, Fuji Electric and Mitsubishi have all emerged as credible SiC contenders.
US SiC start-ups Global Power Devices and USCi have surfaced from stealth mode.
Yole reckons the SiC market will now move from being a discrete device business to a power module business.
Future SiC market growth may depend on whether the auto industry wants the high-frequency, high-temperature technology. If it does, then the SiC-based power module market could be worth $800 million in 2020, says Yole.
The biggest current application is in PV inverters, but most power module manufacturers have SiC in their roadmaps.Tags: auto industry, device business, global power, market leaders
