Hitachi displays business gets new name in Europe

Hitachi’s European displays busienss will be replaced by a new company Kaohsiung Opto-Electronics Europe.

This follows the creation of Japan Display Inc from the combination of the display businesses of Hitachi, Sony and Toshiba.

In November, Hitachi, Sony and Toshiba agreed to integrate their small- and medium-sized display businesses to create a “super” LCD supplier called Japan Display Inc (JDI).

Kaohsiung Opto-Electronics (KOE) is a subsidiary of JDI, created to manufacture and market the former Hitachi TFT LCD display modules for industrial and high reliability applications.

In Europe, KOE Europe will replace Hitachi’s Display Products Group. It will supply standard passive STN and colour TFT displays from 3.5in to 21.3in”.

“The legacy of Hitachi will enable KOE Europe to enter the European market as a strong and confident, premium brand display supplier,” said Mark Stanley, general manager, KOE Europe.

“We will support a large, established European customer base through an existing distribution sales channel and regional sales teams. There will be a balanced mix of design focused distribution partners working alongside our direct OEM sales force,” said Stanley.

Kaohsiung Opto-Electronics has design and manufacturing facilities in Taiwan. This includes in-house design, production and procurement of key components such as LCD glass, colour filters, LCD drivers and backlights.

JDI will be majority owned and operated by Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ), a public-private partnership.

With some backing by the government of Japan, INCJ will invest a total of 200 billion yen in Japan Display.
