Varitronix has expanded its range of monochrome TFT-LCDs by introducing two displays in 3.5 inch sizes, including a transflective option specifically designed for outdoor use.

The supplier offers monochrome TFTs as alternatives to STN and other passive display technologies for automotive and industrial instrumentation applications that have no requirement for full colour.

This is the first offering a transflective mono TFT unit, delivering better sunlight readability, and maintaining a greater contrast ratio in sunlight than the transmissive unit – allowing the backlight to be turned off in more applications.

For indoor use or where power consumption is not an issue, the transmissive equivalent features a higher contrast ratio and is offered as an alternative. 

With contrast ratio between 600:1 to 1000:1, depending on viewing position, the mono TFT panels are designed to offer the similar performance characteristics as full colour TFT in terms of viewing angles and operating temperatures.
