Halogen Free generally refers to a maximum Bromine and Chlorine level of 900ppm each, or a combined total of 1500ppm.

There are a number of industry and legislative drivers toward Halogen Free products for applications requiring enhanced fire safety needs and continuous use temperatures. These include: rising concerns over the risks of corrosive and toxic emissions from halogenated compounds when ignited in a fire, and higher continuous use temperatures, generally defined as 95 deg C.

Legislation is driving the need for more environmentally friendly alternatives to halogenated materials, including RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances), WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment), and JGPSSI (Japan Green Procurement Survey Standardization Initiative) directives.
