Tyco Electronics has introduced a single-pole high current circular connector for use in industrial applications, e.g. spindle motors.
The HC20 circular connector is based on the HF6 spiral spring contact system and provides voltage and current ratings of 690V/150A. The unit’s die-cast zinc housing makes it resistant to both mechanical and chemical stress. It is available in three housing variations: panel mount, connector and coupling.
The HC20 connector features a silver plated copper crimping terminal and a silver plated brass pin/jack. The crimping socket permits conductor cross sections of up to 50mm². Mating and unmating forces are reduced to a minimum for increased mating cycles (housing: at least 200 cycles, contact system: at least 500 cycles).
The spiral spring multiplies the contact points between pin and socket, thus reducing contact resistance. This also improves the overload capacity of the high current contact.
The mechanical screw locking device of the HC20 connector allows for simple handling and increased security under vibration. The two connector halves can be safely locked with only 2.5 turns of the union nut. A mechanical safety device prevents the plug connector from inadvertently loosening when the machine vibrates or is being serviced. The two connector halves can be unmated by pulling the laterally attached security element to loosen the union nut.
The pins of the HC20 connector have from two geometries, polarization and coding, —which allow inset implementation inside the housing with a gradual 45º radial rotation. Colour coding makes it easy to determine the position inside the housing. To meet spindle motor polarity safety requirements, up to eight coding possibilities are provided by the combination of polarization and housing coding. This also avoids confusing neighbouring contacts and incorrect connection of the spindle motor.
The HC20 connector is used for wiring shielded and unshielded lines in cable racks. The devices feature a wide operating temperature range of -40ºC up to +125ºC. Heat resistant Viton axial seals ensure optimal tightness and, in the locked position, the device meets IP67 safety class requirements. Fiberglass reinforced Polyamid is used to insulate the components.
