A Practical Technique for Minimizing the Number of Measurements in Sensor Signal Conditioning Calibration
This paper discusses a practical model of sensor behavior vs. input stimulus and temperature based on general pre-characterization data. A sensor calibration method using this model is described where the number of required stimuli and temperature levels is minimized. The measurements are made at the output of a complete module containing the sensor and conditioning electronics thus taking all system errors into account. A programmable signal conditioning amplifier stores the computed calibration data and uses it to eliminate initial errors.

Example Temperature Measurement Applications Using the ADS1247 and ADS1248
This document discusses the use of the ADS1247 and ADS1248 precision analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) together with a resistive temperature device (RTD) and thermocouple to measure temperature. Included are detailed examples of the most common configurations of a two-wire RTD, a three-wire RTD (with and without hardware compensation), a four-wire RTD, and a thermocouple with cold junction compensation. This document provides sufficient information to enable several alternate configurations to be implemented.

Getting the most out of your instrumentation amplifier design
This article reviews some principles of the classic three-op-amp INA and provides design hints that extend the input commonmode range to avoid saturation while preserving overall gain at maximum value. The article also discusses the removal of large differential DC voltages through active filtering, avoiding passive RC filters at the INA input that otherwise would lower its common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR).

Implementation of Speed Field Oriented Control of 3-Phase PMSM Motor
This application report presents a solution to control a 3-phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous motor using the Texas Instruments (TIä) TMS320F240 digital signal processor (DSP). This processor is part of a new family of DSPs that enable cost-effective design of intelligent controllers for brushless motors. The use of this DSP yields enhanced operations, fewer system components, lower system cost and increased efficiency. The control method presented is field oriented control (FOC). The sinusoidal voltage waveforms are generated by the DSP using the space vector modulation technique. A practical solution is described and results are given in this application report.

A Variable-Speed Sensorless Drive System for Switched Reluctance Motors
With the advent of high-speed digital signal processors (DSPs) specialized for motion control applications, it has become possible to control motors without mechanical (speed or position) sensors. This is achieved by algorithms that estimate the desired quantities in real time, based on the electrical signals in the motor windings. Benefits include cost savings and improved reliability due to reduced component count. This application report presents a low-cost, sensorless drive system for a switched reluctance motor (SRM) based on the Texas Instruments TMS320F243 DSP. Detailed descriptions of the hardware configuration, the sensorless commutation algorithm, its implementation details, and procedures for measuring motor parameters should enable readers to rapidly duplicate and customize a sensorless SRM drive system to meet their specific application.

New Motor Speed Measurement Considerations When Using TMS320C24x DSPs
The TMS320C24x? generation of DSPs provide appropriate internal hardware for interfacing with low-cost, external-speed sensors for motor speed measurement applications. The periodic output signal from the speed sensor is applied to the capture input pin of the DSP and the signal’s period is measured. This information is then used to calculate the motor speed. However, this calculation of motor speed depends on several system parameters. These parameters affect the scaling and normalization factors that must be used in the speed calculation routine for accurate measurements. This application report, therefore, gives an analysis of the speed measurement system to show the effect of system parameters on the calculated speed. The choice of appropriate scaling and normalization factors for a given system is also discussed. Finally, code examples are given to show the software implementation of the speed calculation routine.

New Signal Conditioning an LVDT Using a TMS320F2812 DSP
A linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) is a type of electro-mechanical transducer capable of measuring linear displacement with a high degree of accuracy. The transducer requires external electronic circuitry to produce a stable reference oscillator, and condition the return signal in order to determine displacement. Traditional LVDT circuits are based on analog design techniques, and suffer from several well known limitations such as component aging and drift. This paper presents an alternative design methodology using a digital signal processor (DSP) which is not subject to these effects. The approach also enables the designer to use sophisticated signal conditioning techniques such as software error correction, which can significantly increase the measurement accuracy.
