A battery-powered ‘eco car’ designed and built by University of Derby students is joining 3,000 competitors in the Shell Eco-marathon.

Now in its 30th year, the race is held in Rotterdam and involves a ten-lap street circuit. The event starts tomorrow, 15 May.

It is the second time the University has taken part, it says, and this year’s team has been challenged to build a car that will travel as far as possible on the equivalent of a single litre of fuel.

The University of Derby’s car will be run on battery power, which can be charged through a typical electrical mains point.

“This has been a fantastic experience for our students,” said Dani Harmanto, Lecturer in Engineering at the University of Derby.

“We have worked together with help from the School of Technology and created something we are all proud of. It has been a challenge and a long process but we are all excited to see the car in action as it is finally complete and ready to be raced.”
