Android platform stats: Oreo crumbs ahead of new Android P

Google has released its latest platform stats for the different versions of Android out in the wild, for April 2018.

Android platform stats: Oreo crumbs ahead of new Android P

As always, the stats are based on active devices interacting with Google Play over the period of a week. (“Data collected during a 7-day period ending on April 16, 2018. Any versions with less than 0.1% distribution are not shown”).

The main takeaway is the increase for Android “Nougat” 7.x – particularly 7.1 – at the expense of older versions such as KitKat, Lollipop and Marshmallow. It has gained 3.3 extra points in percentage share, and Nougat is now running on almost a third of all devices in the wild (30.8%).

Version 8, “Oreo”, also finally registers, with an almost 5% share, but of course its successor is already in the starting blocks…

Android 9, codenamed “P”, was first announced at the start of last month and is expected to have a final release at the upcoming Google I/O event, which takes place 8-10 May in Mountain View, California. You can see details of its keynotes and sessions online.
